Lucky 13 Party — Saturday, May 10 at Halflab As luck would have it, we're throwing a party on Saturday, May 10, and if you walk under a ladder and a black cat crosses your path on the way over, never fear! We're celebrating 13 years of HALFLAB (the House Around Lisa, (Neil)Fred, Louise, And Brandon), so the number 13 and all those other bad omens seem like a stroke of good luck to us. This means you can get up on the wrong side of the bed the morning of the party and step on as many sidewalk cracks as you like. Once you arrive at Halflab, go ahead and open your umbrella inside, even if it results in a few broken mirrors. As usual, we don't care whether or not you remove your shoes, but if you do, feel free to put them on the table. All you need to worry about (just a little) is whether you're feeling Low-Stress Potlucky(*). Contribute to the collection of ill-fated treats with an upside-down loaf of bread, a box of Unlucky Charms, or chopsticks standing up in a bowl of rice. Take this chance to cut up a banana or break long noodles into pieces without repercussions. You can even spill salt, give away parsley, or hand hot peppers to a friend with none of the usual unfortunate associations. (It's a lucky break for us if you're familiar with all these superstitions.) With a little luck, you'll find some good conversation and other entertainment during the party. You can try your luck at board and card games, or play Stevie Wonder's "Superstition" on Rock Band. And if you're still bored, try whistling in the dark or luring some birds to fly into the house. We have no fear of evil spirits as we celebrate lucky 13!
