the invitation, sent out friday, august 23:

HALFLAB Two-Thirds' Eve Party

Well, the year 2002 is nearly two-thirds gone, and what do we have to show for it? Why, another HALFLAB party, that's what!

Yes, as the eighth of twelve months comes to a close next week, the House Around Lisa, Fred, Louise, And Brandon will be paying tribute to another great fraction of our time: Two-Thirds. Naturally, we of the Half can think of no better way to pay fractional homage than with an official Halflab No-Stress Potluck(*)!

The party will be on Saturday, August 31, and will begin after two-thirds of the day has passed. (For the less mathematically inclined, and for those who don't believe in midnight as the border between one day and the next, that means it starts at 4pm.) We'll fire up the grill whenever two-thirds of the assembled masses are hungry. Or perhaps around 7pm.

Maybe we'll count down to midnight. But I'd say there's at best a two-thirds chance we'll remember to do so. In any case, the party will likely go late into the night, so feel free to show up whenever and stay for however long. We also have plenty of crash space available for those coming from further away. Not to mention our fabulous hot tub for those interested in a soak.

Note that besides doing your part to honor 66.7%, coming to our party will help prepare you for the remaining two-thirds of the three-day weekend, which perhaps will include other parties, potlucks, and barbeques.

As we've mentioned in advance of previous No-Stress Potlucks(*), if you want to bring food, then by all means do; and if you just can't be bothered or simply forget, that's fine too. But for those who are unable to make this momentous decision on their own, instead of flipping a coin to decide (as we've recommended in the past), this time you might consider using a die -- if you roll anything from one through four, you bring food; five or six, you don't. But as always, if you're disappointed with the outcome, do the other.

Note: If you don't have a die handy or you're just intent on flipping coins, you can achieve a probability of two-thirds as follows. Flip two coins -- if both come up tails, reflip them both (repeat as necessary until at least one coin shows heads); now bring food if one coin is heads and one is tails; don't bring food if both coins are heads.

Also, as always, we encourage you to bring friends, sweeties, children, pets, juggling props, toys, games, puzzles, brain teasers to which the answer turns out to be "two-thirds", jokes to which the punchline turns out to be "two-thirds", and any other implements of merry-making or two-thirds thereof.

Furthermore, feel free to RSVP (or not) to us (at) halflab (dot) com with estimated probability of attendance.
