Housewarming Party June 16th

Greetings!

We've been in our new house for about a month now, so it's about time we had a housewarming party. For those who haven't already heard, the house is called HALFLAB -- House Around Lisa, Fred, Louise, And Brandon. Contact info is as follows:

Halflab
1174 Fremont St
Santa Clara CA 9505-4816

The party will be on Saturday, June 16, starting at 2pm and running late into the night -- stop by whenever for however long. This is a no-stress potluck. There will be a grill on which to barbeque. Oh, and the theme of the party is "half". Or if you prefer, "lab". Or both. Thematic food and dress (and anything else) are encouraged but not required.

The no-stress part of the potluck means not only that there will be no pop quizzes, but also that if you want to bring food, please do, but definitely don't feel obliged to. If everyone brings a larger quantity of food than they themselves eat, then the hosts wind up with way more leftovers than they could possibly want, and a lot of food winds up being wasted. Our innovative solution to this ancient potluck difficulty is this. If you're not sure whether to bring food, flip a coin: heads you bring food, tails you don't bother. But if you're disappointed by the outcome of the coin toss, then do the other.

Similarly, you should feel free, but not obliged, to bring games, juggling props, friends, kids, pets, and anything else you can think of. (Note that the back yard is fenced, so pets can run around. Not to mention kids. And adults.) And again, if you're uncertain on whether or not to bring any of these, try the coin toss method described above. (Tip: If you can't decide whether to flip a nickel or a quarter, try flipping a dime to make that decision -- heads you use a nickel, tails a quarter. But if you're disappointed by what the dime tells you, do the other.)

Just a little reminder that this coming Saturday is our housewarming party. Hope to see you then!

Incidentally, like bringing food, you're certainly welcome to RSVP -- mail sent to us (at) halflab (dot) com will go to all four of us, by the way -- but you're not required to do so. I could offer a suggestion for how to decide whether to RSVP, but perhaps you can guess what my suggestion would be (if not, feel free to mail me and ask, and while you're at it, you could include what your RSVP would be if you were going to RSVP).

However, let me also mention that your RSVP can be probabilistic; for example you might say, "There's a .5 probability that I will show up, and if I do show up, I will either come by myself or bring exactly two additional people, with equal probability. Thus the expected value of the number of people supplied to the party by me is 1."

And remember: certainty is just a special case of uncertainty.
